Why Immigration is the Key

Why must immigration be reduced to achieve a stable population? American natives achieved “replacement” rate (a birth-death rate where one child is born for each person dying off) in the 1970s and would be well on our way to stabilizing the population were it not for immigration.

But changes in immigration policies caused the admission of newcomers to skyrocket; in 1998, we admitted 2.7 times as many immigrants as in the year of the commission’s report, 1972. Immigration is increasingly identified as the primary factor to be dealt with in population growth.

population density graph

At present, our population is growing by about 3 million people a year; yet legal and illegal immigration are adding about 1.5 million people a year—about 50 percent. If we do not lower the level of immigration back to traditional levels right away, our population will grow to 404 million by the year 2050—a 47 percent increase. [Note: In 2002 the Census Bureau released a preliminary recalculation of its projection to account for the more than six million additional residents in 2000 that it did not expect to find. In that revised projection the 2050 population is 420.1 million residents, a 49 percent increase from 2000.] Of that increase, 76 million—58 percent—will be post-2000 immigrants and their descendents. Unless you want your children to have to live with 50 percent more people than you live with now—and with the urban expansion, social tension, environmental degradation, and living congestion that additional population will create—you should support immigration reform.

Key Requirements For A Search Friendly CMS

One of the most important SEO decisions you make is the selection of your content management system (CMS). Your CMS can make SEO easy, or, in some cases, make SEO virtually impossible. Here are 14 crucial elements you should verify in a CMS before you commit to using it.

1. Control over titles, H1 headings and meta descriptions. In this day and age it may shock you that there are CMS’ that don’t allow you control over these basic page elements, but sadly, they exist. Worse, the vendors of these systems often charge exorbitant fees to fix the job as part of a customization project. Simply insist on these capabilities, and if it costs anything extra (at all) pick a different vendor.

2. Control over image alt attributes. Make sure you have the ability to implement the alt attribute within your image tags. This is the best method you have to tell a search engine what an image is about, so the capability is a must.

3. Custom anchor text. Another must have. Make sure the CMS you choose allows you to do this. Don’t assume that it can, because many systems can’t.

4. Nofollow, noindex support. While you might be able to live without this one, remember that this capability can save you from duplicate content nightmares, and it is also useful to to do some basic PageRank sculpting.

5. Avoid hidden text issues. Not too long ago I wrote about how some CMS systems make legitimate use of display: none, but there are many other ways to create hidden text. Many of these uses are legitimate, and should not be a major worry. However, do some searching for comments about your potential CMS on the forums and see if anyone has had hidden text problems with it.

6. Canonical redirects. Verify that you can implement a proper canonical redirect (using 301s!). In addition, check out the way the CMS handles the default document. Are you going to end up with all your internal links pointing to www.youdomain.com/index.html (or something similar)? This is not desirable.

7. Default redirects. Hopefully, the default redirects are 301 redirects. If not, it must be simple to select a 301. Otherwise at some point in the future some well meaning developer will end up using a 302 by accident.

8. Clean URLs without session parameters.. It is critical that your CMS not rely on session IDs on your URLs, or clutter URLs with other parameters. The CMS should rely on cookies to pass data about the user, and just accept the fact that users without cookies get less optimized performance.

9. Customizable URL structure.. The CMS designer should not be the one deciding the URL structure of your site. Your SEO team should. Don’t accept a CMS that does not allow you to control this.

10. Breadcrumbs. These really help reinforce the structure of the site for the search engine crawlers. It also passes the “theme” of sections of your site in an optimal way.

11. Duplicate content control. This is one of the most common CMS problems. Many of them create reams and reams of duplicate content. The good ones either avoid this altogether, or they give you a way to address it.

12. Scalable optimization. On large sites you will not be able to hand-optimize pages. You will need a scalable way to address these, and flexibility from your CMS is required to help you with that.

13. A way to publish articles on an optional basis. On a large site you may have a catalog of similar pages you publish with content from a database. You may wish to supplement that with some handwritten content, but if you have thousands of these pages you may be able to only do it for some of them. If your CMS allows you to handcraft articles for only some of the pages and not others you can simply write the articles as your team has bandwidth to do so, and publish them as they get written.

14. Sitemap generation.. Since your CMS is helping in the generation of the site, it should be able to help you create an XML sitemap.

Good, search-friendly CMS systems do exist. Some of the good ones I have worked with are Drupal, Joomla and PixelSilk. Of course blogging platforms like Wordpress work well for the purposes too.

Invest the time upfront to address these issues. It can really save your bacon in the end.

Creating a REST Request

The Yahoo! Search Web Services are all REST services. That means you can easily construct request URLs that will work in your browser, on the command line, and in your code. For our example, we'll construct a query to search the web for PDF files containing the term "finances". See the web search documentation to understand the details of this service.

URL Construction

Most API requests will use GET. If the specific documentation requires POST, see the section on POST URL construction below.

All search request URLs start with the hostname and resemble the following sample:

http://search.yahooapis.com

After the hostname are the service name and version number:

/WebSearchService/V1/

Next is the method followed by a question mark.

webSearch?

Those components form the base URL.

http://search.yahooapis.com/WebSearchService/V1/webSearch?

The method is followed by the actual query parameters, which take the form argument=value, where the arguments and values are url encoded. Multiple parameters are separated by an ampersand (&). The following example searches the web database for PDF files containing the term "finances":

http://search.yahooapis.com/WebSearchService/V1/webSearch?appid=YahooDemo&query=finances&format=pdf

The API documentation for each service provides the service name and lists all of the mandatory and optional parameters, in addition to describing the response structure, rate limits, etc.

POST URL Construction

Using POST to communicate with the API is very similar to using GET. All search request URLs still begin with the hostname, service name, version number and method:

http://search.yahooapis.com/WebSearchService/V1/contextSearch

Note that there is no question mark following the method.

The query parameters are passed in the POST data block. They still take the form argument=value and are properly url encoded. Multiple parameters are separated by an ampersand (&).

appid=YahooDemo&query=madonna&context=Italian+sculptors+and+painters+of+the+renaissance+favored+the+Virgin+Mary+for+inspiration.

Ten Ways To Get Web Traffic Fast - And Free

e several ways to get website traffic fast and free, and I’m going to share ten niche ways with you.

1. Article Submission

You don’t need to be an award winníng expert on the topic you are writing about - just pick an area that is related to the theme of your website, do a bit of research using a search engine and before you know it you will have more knowledge on that subject than most. Write in a relaxed, straightforward way. And, of course, when you add your details at the end of your article, make certain that you include your web address as well.

2. URL Submission

This sounds so obvious, yet so many people overlook it. Website URL submission is about getting more links to your website to help your website get ranked high on major search engines, thus getting more visitor traffic by, well, submittíng your website URL to the major search engines. You can buy or subscribe to software that will do this, but it is quite possible to get a good return by submitting manually.

3. Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a way for internet users to store, classify, share, search and discover Internet resources that they find useful. Since social bookmarks are saved online, users are able to access them from anywhere - at home, at work or while travelling.

These lists can be accessible to the public by users of a specific network or website. What you need to do first is register with a social bookmarking site which allows you to store and tag bookmarks. Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given “tags”, and rank the resources by the number of users which have bookmarked them. This means that other visitors and members of social bookmarking sites can search for resources by topic, category, keyword, tags, or popularity to see what others have saved. As a user, social bookmarking sites let you find useful, informative resources through pages that have been tagged because others have found them to be valuable sources. Voila - more web traffíc. Free.

4. Forum Posting

Forum posting is a hands down alternative to paid advertising methods. For just a few hours of work every week, you can capture batches of interested leads everyday. The more forums you contribute to, the more you will gain traffic. If you are an active forum poster, you will also get a good feel about the kind of products that are hot on the market.

Please don’t overlook the forum signature or commonly called resource box - it’s a powerful free advertising tool for you. What you must do is edit your forum signature. Basically, a curiosity inducing one-liner and a link to your website is great. Once you have edited and saved your signature, it will appear at the bottom of all your comments in the forum discussions. That means, the more you participate in the discussions in the forums, the more people see your semi-ad written on your signature. I promise, this will encourage people to visit your website, and hopefully buy from you.

Business Travelers Use TCHNetwork.com to Search/Request Corporate Housing Needs

Cleveland, OH (PRESS RELEASE - June 6, 2009) — The current economy has made it clear to relocation executives that corporate housing is the most economical solution for their employees’ temporary housing needs. Two years ago, a site that was created as a simple tool for corporate housing providers to minimize vacancy has become an essential resource for business travelers. The Corporate Housing Network’s (TCHNetwork.com’s) strategic ability to match and connect those seeking temporary housing with quality providers has even captured the attention of The New York Times in an article just this past April.

Search Corporate Furnished Housing Rentals and Suites

The benefits of utilizing The Corporate Housing Network are two-fold. First, seekers can perform a very targeted Search for their employees’, their clients’, or their family’s temporary housing needs on this site; there is never a charge to search or book housing. Secondly, “What strategically differentiates The Corporate Housing Network from any other site out there is the ability to have multiple companies and owners Bid for your business - in minutes,” says Erin Bozan, President and Co-Founder of TCHNetwork.com. “This also ensures our users that they are receiving our housing providers’ very best offers.”

A “Bid”, otherwise known to members and users as a “Request” for housing, has become a very effective tool for all parties involved. “It is not uncommon for someone searching for temporary housing to have very specific variables — from requiring to be near public transportation to mandating that their corporate apartment, condo, or home be within a particular school district,” says Kat Schneider Fotheringham, CEO and Co-Founder.

If after performing a Search for corporate housing an exact result does not surface, the person seeking housing will then post a Request for Housing; when they do, this site’s proprietary system effectively sends out these requirements to multiple providers. Only providers who have an exact match will then “Bid” on the business.

“Our system places the person seeking housing in the driver’s seat. Visitors to our site are pleased to be presented with multiple options that include the amenities they need, at the budget they require,” adds Bozan.

Providers like the ‘Request’ function on The Corporate Housing Network as well. “The most frustrating, and cost prohibitive, aspect of dealing with leads in this industry is that a team can spend hours researching the ‘perfect solution’ for a client, only to learn later that their budget is not a match for our services,” commented Kathy Policaro, Director of Business Development and Corporate Accounts for Churchill Corporate Services.

“The infrastructure of TCHNetwork.com, coupled with the Search Housing and Request features, allows providers to only spend time on prospects who are a match for their particular product,” adds Policaro.

About The Corporate Housing Network (TCHNetwork.com):

TCHNetwork.com offers real time availability alternatives for thousands of short term, furnished housing options. The Corporate Housing Network’s international network of temporary corporate housing providers offer furnished accommodations from apartments and condos to single family homes and vacation rentals — all over the world. There is never a charge to look or book corporate housing on The Corporate Housing Network.

Build a Search Engine in PERL by Joseph Ryan

"Search 121,617,892,992 web pages" claims the front page of the new search engine Cuil (pronounced "cool" apparently). Those 120 billion pages are about three times as many as Google actually indexes, according to developer Anna Patterson... and she should know as until 2006 she worked there. Presented in a kind of "magazine style," Cuil will apparently get more pertinent results as it drills into the contents of a page, unlike Google's complex ranking system. Since two more of the development team also worked for Google, and there's $33 million of venture capital behind the new site, it is certainly going to be an interesting development to keep tabs on. Cuil takes search requests from today... though as it can't find me I'd say it needs tweaking. [Cuil via Physorg]

Project types

Monday, June 29, 2009

  • Get started by downloading the official Drupal core files. These official releases come bundled with a variety of modules and themes to give you a good starting point to help build your site. Drupal core includes basic community features like blogging, forums, and contact forms, and can be easily extended by downloading other contributed modules and themes.

  • Installation profiles are a feature in Drupal core that was added in the 5.x series. The Drupal installer allows you to specify an installation profile which defines which modules should be enabled, and can customize the new installation after they have been installed. This will allow customized "distributions" that enable and configure a set of modules that work together for a specific kind of site (Drupal for bloggers, Drupal for musicians, Drupal for developers, and so on).

  • Contributed (contrib) modules are plugins for Drupal that extend, build or enhance Drupal core functionality. Use matching versions (modules released for Drupal 5.x will not work for Drupal 6.x). Contributed modules are not part of Drupal core releases and may or may not have optimized code/functionality. If a module solves your needs please consider joining forces and helping the maintainer.

  • Themes allow you to change the look and feel of your Drupal site. These contributed themes are not part of any official release and may not work correctly. Only use matching versions of themes with Drupal. Themes released for Drupal 5.x will not work for Drupal 6.x. Many of these themes can also be previewed on the third party site the Theme Garden

  • Theme engines control how certain themes interact with Drupal. Most users will want to stick with the default included with Drupal core. These contributed theme engines are not part of any official release and may not work correctly. Only use matching versions of theme engines with Drupal. Theme engines released for Drupal 5.x will not work for Drupal 6.x.

  • Drupal uses English by default, but may be translated to many other languages. To install these translations, unzip them and import the .po file through Drupal's administration interface for localization. You will need to turn on the locale module if it's not already enabled. For up to date information on where the translation infrastructure is going, please see the localization server project.

We are now going to disable the default Drupal search engine. Then make Apache Solr the only search engine available. This is a big performance improvement for large Drupal site.

There are currently two modules able to do this. CORE SEARCHES & SUPRESS SEARCH. CORE SEARCH module modify Drupal core whereas SUPPRESS SEARCH does not. Modifying Drupal core is consider really bad by the Drupal community. You should not modify Drupal core. But override it instead. For this reason this handbook will use the SUPRESS SEARCH module.

Download and install SUPRESS SEARCH module.

Navigate to ADMINISTER > SITE CONFIGURATION > SUPPRESS SEARCH SETTINGS
Under section SEARCH FORM SUBMIT PATH type in

search/apachesolr_search/

Check HIDE CONTENT TAB box.
Check HIDE USERS TAB box.

Click on SAVE CONFIGURATION button.

Click on EMPTY CORE SEARCH INDEX button.
Drupal will ask

Are you sure you want to empty core's search index?

Click on EMPTY CORE SEARCH INDEX button again.

If successful the last two lines of the EMPTY SEARCH INDEX section should now read.

search_index: 0
search_dataset: 0

Navigate to ADMINISTER > SITE CONFIGURATION > PERFORMANCE
At the bottom of the page click on CLEAR CACHE DATA button.

Navigate to ADMINISTER > SITE CONFIGURATION > SEARCH SETTINGS
Under section INDEXING THROTTLE set the NUMBER OF ITEMS TO INDEX PER CRON RUN to 0 (zero).
Click on SAVE button.

To test go to http://yourdomainnamehere.com/search/apachesolr_search/
Under ENTER YOUR KEYWORDS.
Type in a keyword.
Click on SEARCH button.

If your Solr search returns no result go to http://yourdomainnamehere.com?q=admin/settings/apachesolr/index
Make sure that the first line reads

The search index is generated by running cron. 100% of the site content has been sent to the server. There are 0 items left to send.

If not 100% click on 'running cron' link until 100% of the site content has been sent to the Solr server.
Tips: Clicking the 'running cron' link does the same thing as going to http://yourdomainnamehere.com/cron.php

You have successfully disabled the default Drupal search engine. Then made Apache Solr the only search engine available.
