How to Search for Available Domain Names

How to Search for Available Domain Names

As you search the list of available domain names, you may feel like all the good ones are taken. Indeed, most of the common words already have Web sites built around them, but with a little effort and creativity, you can find a name that’s right for you.

Simple Domain Name Searches
The easiest way to search for an available domain name is to start at a registrar Web site. Registration companies accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) are responsible for distributing Internet domain names.

ICANN maintains a database of all registered names that can be searched by a simple application called “whois”. Whois can be accessed at most registration company Web sites or at www.internic.net/whois.html. If a domain name is already registered, whois will list details of the registration, including who owns the name and when the name registration will expire. In some cases, you may need to contact a registrar to get in touch with the actual owner, as the owners of domain names can opt to have their personal information blocked from these searches.

A More Sophisticated Approach
Several companies provide services beyond simple searching. Here are a few:

* Nameboy (www.nameboy.com/): This site will take a primary and secondary word and mash them together in obvious and not-so-obvious ways that can start some creative brainstorming. Nameboy will also list the availability of all the combinations it creates.
* DomainsBot (www.domainsbot.com/): DomainsBot takes a suggested name and reports on its availability, but it also reports on the availability of similar names and names that are for sale or about to expire.

When All Else Fails
If you absolutely have to have a domain name that’s not available, you may be able to buy it, either commercially, at auction or from a private seller. Many registrar companies have lists of domain names that are available for sale with prices ranging from a few dollars to prices in the millions.

As you might imagine, prices likes this have created a booming business in “domain brokering”. Several companies have become very successful at buying and selling domain names. If you’re looking for something specific, and you can afford the cost, a domain broker could be your solution.

Building Blocks for Similarity Search

Building Blocks for Similarity Search (PhD Thesis)

Description

A continuously increasing amount of information is available in digital formats. This information is not limited to textual documents, but can also be represented as images, audio, movies, 3D models or compound documents consisting of several parts. The collection of these documents form large-scale digital libraries which can be publicly available online (e.g. the ACM Digital Library or the free Wikipedia) or private (e.g. a personal collection of documents).

Due to the number of artifacts held in such collections, users must be provided with a variety of tools and interfaces to retrieve the information they are looking for. In particular, keyword-based search might not be ideal or sufficient, e.g. to describe an image such that another person may find it - in particular if such person may use a have a different native language as it is common in todays world where the internet connects all continents. In that case, still a picture may say more than a thousand words.

Content-based image retrieval, as complementary approach to keyword-based queries, ranks results based on similarity to query examples. This is particularly promising for image retrieval, where visually similar objects can represent good query results. However, this poses the problem of how to find a sufficiently good starting image. To solve this problem, components to sketch an image on paper and/or keywords may help.

The purpose of this thesis is to identify important components providing functionality to not only support various search paradigms, but also combine them in order to achieve good user experience. This requires that systems do not force users to follow only one approach and / or in a particular order. For instance, a user should not be forced to start either with a query image, sketch or keyword-based query, but can start with whatever serves best the information need. During search, it must be able to add or remove information in order to refine the search.
It is also essential, to capture as much knowledge from the user as possible. E.g., images in queries should not be considered "as-is", but seen in the context of the query. Therefore the user must be enabled to highlight areas of the image making it relevant for the query.
The system must be extensible to include new knowledge resources easily, such that it can be adjusted to the information need of the user, e.g. by term-based query expansion in the domain of the current query.
As an example application, a novel system to query by sketch is implemented. This uses interactive paper to allow the user to draw sketches on paper, which are used by the system as a starting point. It also allows to define regions of interests in paper to give detailed feedback, which areas of an image make it a good result to a query. Such information is used to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the system compared to state-of-the-art image retrieval system. Keyword-based queries are supported and enriched by annotations added by users. Workflows provide extensibility to enrich the system with additional information, e.g. domain-specific thesaurus.

The basic buidlings blocks of such a system are a number of components to

* manage collections of documents
* extract features to make documents comparable
* compute similarity with an appropriate distance measure
* provide efficient index structures to increase speed of query execution
* enable the user to issue a query, i.e. by drawing a sketch or select a region of interest

This thesis project is the continuation of the work at UNIBAS that started at UMIT in Fall 2003.
Funding The PhD thesis has started within the EU-funded DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries, contibuted to the EU-funded DILIGENT and is now finished within the context of Query by Sketching (SNF Project 200021-117800)

Black Day-Aug 15th

Black Day-Aug 15th: Kashmiris hoist Pakistani flags in Srinagar. Burn Indian flags
| PAKISTAN LEDGER | ???????? ????? | August 16, 2008 | Moin Ansari | ???? ??????? | Page copy protected against web site content infringement by Copyscape | RUPEE NEWS | Moin Ansari | August 16, 2008 | ???? ??????? | ????? ????? | The Crescent and Star flutters in the hearts and the minds of the brave people of Kashmir. No amount of repression and obfuscation can hide that fact. The Kashmiris once again proved it in the dog days of August. What do you say about a people that hoist Pakistani flags and hold freedom rallies on August 14th (Pakistan independence day), and then the next day on August 15th (Indian independence day) they burn Indian flags and host black flags across the state.
It says that the the Kashmiris in their hearts and in their souls are Pakistan. they listen to Pakistani songs, watch Pakistani Television and root for the Pakistani cricket team during the India-Pakistan matches. Pro-freedom, Pro-Pakistan and Anti-Indian demonstrations continue in Srinagar. “They” hide the pictures of the Pakistan flags, but once in a while, they slip up. Keep an eye out, you will find hundreds of green Muslim flags mingled in with Pakistani flags in the crowds, and atop building in Indian Occuped Kashmir. You see them burning the Indian flag and kissing the Pakistani flag. They yearn for freedom and they aspire to become Pakistanis. Pakistan is their destiny and “Azadi” (freedom) is their dream.

Kashmir: Indian intellectuals beletedly grow a conscience! “They” mistranslate “Azadi” as independence. For the Kashmiris “Azadi” means freedom. Independence from India is “freedom” for the Kashmiris. Indians rethinking Kashmir: Kashmiris yearn to be free and become part of Pakistan
